Don't Be  A Square, Learn to Knit, Afghan Knit-Along, Block 15, " The Mighty Miter"

Behold The Mighty Miter!

This block starts in one corner and increases along the center line, using the backward loop cast-on to grow outward.  For many of us, the backward loop was the first cast-on that we learned.  Others picked it up in the course of making buttonholes or adding stitches at the underarm of a sleeve.

If you haven’t learned it yet, here’s your chance.  Amy shows us how!

If you know how to knit and purl but are ready for the next step this KAL (Knit-Along) is for you. We will be joining Universal Yarn and Amy Gunderson for this KAL and you will have the added benefit of hands on help from Heidi. If you missed the earlier blocks - no worries, we will help you catch up.

Tuesday, 28 Oct., 5:30 - 7

Instructor - Heidi Narum

Supplies-

At least 4 colors of Uptown worsted or other worsted weight yarn. Color combination ideas. 2 balls of each color. Each block uses about 20 oz.

Math for Knitters

I know, you may have considered not reading past the word “math”.  Sure, you may have wondered what a rational person would need to calculate how many cars were on the train (hint:  a lot). But really, when you are doing math so you can knit a beautiful shawl or so that perfect sweater will also fit perfectly, math is fun.  Trust me!

Don’t be afraid of knitting math!  Be afraid of mountain lions, if you must.  But knitting math will make you feel strong, confident, and you will be able to impress your friends.

We will cover the basics you will need for any pattern, move on to more specific types of knitting, and answer any questions you might have.  Bring and pencil, paper, and a calculator.  And math jokes.  That’s the only thing we will laugh at in this class.

Date: Saturday, 18 Oct., 12:30 - 2
Instructor: Avivah Smith-Nelson
Fee: $10

To register, please stop on by the shop, call us at (505) 672-2008 or send an email to classes@warmheartsyarn.com. We appreciate 24 hour class registration notice so we are best able to prepare for our students. Thank you!

Not Just Yarn - We Have Gifts Too.

Looking for a gift this holiday season? We have you covered with some very nice things from local crafters.

Pair some Amateur Chemistry soap with an O'Neil washcloth and put it in a handmade bag for an extra special treat.

We have a new soap with a new scent at Warm Hearts Yarn! It has been so popular that last all of them sold before we left the store two weeks ago, so we had to make more before we told more people. What makes this soap so addictive? It is the PIkake flower scent, which is flowery and sweet enough to attract a honeybee. Pikake flowers are used to make Hawaiian Leis. If your next tropical vacation is not close enough, stop by and get some "Save the Bees!" soap.

Don't Be  A Square, Learn to Knit, Afghan Knit-Along, Well Plaid

Block two of our month of plaid!  Where our last block used stripes raised above the fabric of the square, Block Fourteen “Well Plaid”  creates lines of color flush with the rest of the square.

Amy Gunderson achieves this by working one vertical stitch in the row in reverse stockinette, then applying the contrasting color to the purled stitch using a crochet hook.  It’s rather ingenious.  The video shows how it’s achieved. -

If you know how to knit and purl but are ready for the next step this KAL (Knit-Along) is for you.
